A RUGBY League legend from Astley has released a testimonial calendar to raise money for a charity which has supported his son who was born with a club foot.

Micky Higham, who plays for Warrington Wolves, paid a visit to Golden Square, a shopping centre in the town to sign copies of his testimonial calendar.

The 34-year-old hooker has also played with St Helen’s, Leigh and Wigan as well as representing England and Great Britain during his 14-year career.

Micky has been granted a three-month testimonial by league officials, during which he is excused from playing to travel the country promoting himself and his charity work and a percentage of the proceeds from the sales of his calendar will go towards Steps.

“I just want to thank everyone who has supported me during my testimonial. All the fans have just been amazing and the whole experience has been quite humbling,” he said.

Steps is a national charity which supports children and adults affected by a lower limb condition - such as clubfoot or a hip disorder.

Micky’s wife, Kate, explained: “We chose Steps as our charity as they’ve been a great help to us. Our eldest son, Harry, was diagnosed with having a club foot at the 20-week scan and at the time they thought it might be corrected with massage.

“But when he was born it was far worse than that and he had his first cast put on when he was four days old.”

As Harry grew and his foot still turned inwards significantly, he was forced to wear special boots with bars across them and went on to endure three major tendon operations.

Now an active and energetic 10-year-old, and big brother to five-year-old Alex, Harry’s foot problems are finally a thing of the past and the youngster is showing great promise as a budding footballer.

“His foot is not perfect, and it never will be and he’s getting to that age now where he’s more aware of it,” said Kate.

“But he’s active and he’s healthy and there’s always someone worse off than you so if we can give the charity a bit of a push so that they can help more families that will be great.”
