A FIRE broke out at a care home after oven gloves fell down the back of a cooker.

The gloves ignited after coming into contact with vents which let hot air out from the cooker at Westleigh Lodge Care Home, in Nel Pan Lane, Leigh.

Firefighters from Leigh attended at about 1.45pm yesterday, Monday, with the blaze being described as “minor” by officials.

Residents at the home did not have to be evacuated.

Home manager Suzanne Sharrock said: “We were alerted by staff that oven gloves had caused a fire on the cooker.

“They isolated the gas and used a fire blanket meaning the fire was out before the fire service arrived but in order to safeguard the residents we needed to be sure.

“The gas supply and oven were then checked by gas and electric contractors to ensure they were safe which they were. There were just a few scorched tiles.

“We evacuated residents from the first floor directly under where the fire was to another room and I am really happy with how the staff handled everything.”
