WORK to construct parking bays as part of the guided busway plans have started in Tyldesley.

North Midland Construction PLC, the principal contractor appointed by Wigan Council to construct the bus priority improvements in Leigh, began work on Monday to create 54 parking bays on Railway Street.

Temporary fencing has been installed this week before the main work began and is expected to be completed at the end of February.

The works will consist of the introduction of echelon parking to increase car parking capacity in the area.

This will involve site clearance, excavation, kerbing, drainage works, surfacing and the installation of new street lighting.

In a letter sent to residents, Wigan Council said: “Access to Railway Street and the surrounding residential streets will be maintained at all times.

“We ask that residents park away from where the works are taking place to ensure there is no damage to their cars and also so they aren’t restricted from getting in and out of their cars.

“We understand that these works are likely to cause some disruption and apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.”
