WHEN it comes to homegrown fruit and veg, John Fairhurst’s produce is top of the crops.
He won this year’s James Prescott trophy and a £25 DIY voucher, recognising his plot at Lilford Park allotments as one of the best in the borough.
He said: “I enjoy working outdoors on the allotment – it keeps me healthy and I love growing my own produce. I didn’t expect to win the trophy so am really delighted.”
Second place was Les Hawkins from Hope Carr allotments, and third was Eddie Hart of Skew Bridge allotments.
The competition is named after Leigh gardener James Prescott, who gave the prize originally to Leigh Borough Council in 1956 to encourage allotment upkeep.
