PUPILS at Bedford High School have been showing off their baking skills to raise money for the Trussell Trust.

The first Great Bedford Bake Off saw pupils create 46 spectacular cakes which were then sold after the event to raise more than £200 for the trust, which runs Atherton and Leigh Foodbank.

The bake off was inspired by year eight pupil Harry Riding who used sponge and icing to create his very own homemade Vesuvius as part of a project on volcanoes in his geography lesson.

“It was so impressive that we thought other students might want to have a go at something similar, which is where the idea for bake off began,” said teacher and competition organiser Sarah Earner.

“The brief was a simple one - creativity, imagination and taste. We were looking for the biggest, brightest and most delicious cakes.”

The competition was judged by head teacher Helen Phillips and Leigh’s very own cake connoisseur Richard Waterfield from Waterfield’s Bakery.
