A BRASS band from a Tyldesley school blew their own trumpets when they performed at the Houses of Parliament .

The Fred Longworth High School Brass Band, conducted by head of music Helen Robinson, performed carols at The Houses of Parliament, Westminster and at the foot of Big Ben during the lunchtime period.

The reigning National Champions brass band were invited to perform by Andy Burnham MP who works closely with the school.

The public were also able to see the performance as they lined the street next to the River Thames.

Mrs Robinson said: “I am extremely proud of my wonderful band.

“It has been hard work and very tiring but they have all been so professional and we have all enjoyed every minute - working as a team and making great music for all to enjoy.”

In the new year, the band will record a new CD and all proceeds from it will be donated to Millie's Trust.

The trust was set up by Joanne and Dan Thompson whose daughter died, aged nine months, after choking on her lunch while at nursery.

Their aim is to ensure that as many people are first aid trained in the hope that nobody has to suffer like their daughter.

By a stroke of fate on the date that the band were due to perform, Joanne and Dan were in Westminster to start the proceedings on passing Millie's Law.

Joanne and Dan support the band’s project and hope to come and meet the musicians.

“This is what it is all about - bringing people together through the enjoyment of music and we are all really looking forward to next year and the fantastic opportunities that are over the horizon, especially the recording of the new CD for such a fantastic charity that is close to our hearts,” said Mrs Robinson.
