THE Leigh Lions have been collecting donations for Atherton and Leigh Foodbank.

They presented a cheque of £350 to Warren Done from the foodbank after collecting donations at Morrisons in Leigh.

Jennifer Curry, from the Lions, said: “Warren came to see the Leigh Lions over a couple of weeks ago and explained all about the food banks.

“It opened our eyes to just how many wonderful volunteers they have working for them.

“The warehouse is in Astley, it is an amazing operation and the food is given out through vouchers from the benefits office, doctors or various organisations.

“Some people have a large bill or an unexpected bill, like their car broken down or a gas or electricity bill and just can't see their way to buying food and paying a large or unexpected bill too, so the food bank enables them to get the bill paid then get back to normal.

“It's not every week given to the same people, but it is an enormous help when needed.”

The Leigh Lions also gave Warren a donation of £200 which will be used to buy essentials like toothpaste and toiletries.

Leigh MP Andy Burnham also paid a visit to the foodbank. He said: "It was great to pay a visit to the foodbank so that I could thank in person all the team from Trussell Trust and volunteers for the brilliant job they are doing supporting people through difficult times.

"We are so lucky to have them and I shudder to think what would happen if they weren't there. I would also like to thank Leigh Lions who have given their time in recent weeks been collecting for the Foodbank at Morrison's and have delivered an impressive donation.

"But most of all I would like to thank the people of Leigh. The foodbank team told me how overwhelmed they had been by the kindness of people who have responded to their calls for help.

"This town has no equal in terms of the generosity of its people and that's what makes me so proud to be its MP."
