AN ‘epic’ hedgerow is being built on a new nature reserve in Tyldesley.

The first part of the mile-long scheme, which aims to protect habitats for great crested newt, skylark and lapwing in the area close to Tyldesley town centre, will begin on Sunday and volunteers are needed to lend a hand from 10.30am until 3pm.

The reserve is owned by The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside.

The trust’s Wigan projects officer Sue Lonsdale said: “It is an epic hedgerow with a total of 9,000 trees being planted, covering over a mile of hedgerow.

“Obviously we will not be planting it all on the Sunday but we would like to make some serious headway with it.”

Sue will meet volunteers on the farm track off Mort Lane, just after Highcrest Grove at 10.30am.

Everyone should wear old clothes and bring a packed lunch.
