A SUPPORT group has been set up for adults with autism.

With Our Words or WOW was created as a social enterprise in partnership with True Colours CIC.

Leigh MP Andy Burnham was guest speaker at an event to launch the new user-led group for adults with Asperger’s syndrome and autism who do not meet the criteria to gain funded support.

The group will help its members develop skills and opportunities by building on social skills and networks, education, voluntary and paid employment as well as organising social events.

The group is funded by a membership subscription and will plan various sessions for their weekly meetings on Wednesdays from 10 am until 2pm at the Trust in Leigh offices on Market Street.

True Colours managing director, Marian Milling, said: “This may be having guest speakers to discuss things such as housing issues, employment, money management and banking or planning a get together.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to be themselves and discuss issues they have with their autism and supporting each other on how to manage their condition to lead fulfilling lives.

“The launch was a huge success for each group member who planned and presented to members of the public.

“Five months ago this was not possible for many of the members of WOW due to low confidence and self esteem.

“It just shows that with a small amount of support and guidance what can be achieved.”

True Colours, based on Bengal Street, Leigh, has worked in conjunction with Business Growth Hub and Wigan Council to create the platform for autistic adults to engage with each other and develop new skills.

WOW will open up opportunities for those with autism by offering faster routes to employment; improving social skills and helping them to gain a better understanding of their condition.
