FIRE crews tackled three grass fire on Friday afternoon – with high winds making tackling one of the blazes difficult.

The first one broke out at 2.30pm on land off Hulme Avenue, which is just off Wigan Road, Leigh.

It covered 150 square metres and crews were on the scene for 20 minutes.

Firefighters in Bury were called to land of Alfred Street at 3.30pm in the town with the blaze spreading to fencing and trees. They were there for an hour.

Both of the fires are thought to have been started deliberately by youths.

Crews from Wigan, Leigh, Atherton and Hindley were called to a field of Edna Road, Leigh at 7.15pm when to tackle a fire measuring 200 square metres.

A fire spokesman said: “High winds made tackling the fire difficult and we were there for an hour.”
