GREEN-fingered residents are being given the chance to taste the fruits of their labour.

Keen gardener Wilf Ford will be on hand to teach people how to grow their own food this spring.

Wilf, who is teaming up with Wigan and Leigh Homes, will be out and about in Leigh during April and May to show tenants how to create their own fruit and vegetable patch.

And Wilf said growing food is a great idea as it can be both cheap and healthy.

He said: “Growing your own fruit and vegetables is really easy and very satisfying. It can help bring the food bill down and provides important skills. I’ve been growing my own food for years now and I love it.”

Wilf is an expert gardener and can also advise on a range of vegetables and fruits that are easy to grow.

The grow-your-own scheme was put into operation last year and was a roaring success, with 469 tenants taking part in the free sessions.

Tenants who are interested in learning about how to grow their own food can contact Wigan and Leigh Homes tenant participation team on 01942 486557, freephone 0800 389 7652 or email enquiries@walh.co.uk to book a visit to their community.

Everyone will be given a selection of potato seeds, onion sets, vegetable plug plants as well as a variety of seeds to get them started.
