AN Atherton pub has scooped not one but two prestigious awards in a competition to find the country's best drinking holes.

The Pendle Witch has won Pub of the Year and Cider Pub of the Year in the annual Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) regional awards for South East Lancashire.

The pub has not only been judged on the quality of drinks on offer, but also value for money and service it provides for its customers.

CAMRA is a voluntary organisation campaigning for real ale, community pubs and consumer rights.

Landlords Carl and Janet Williams are thrilled with the double victory, and say it is down to the hard work of the staff.

Mrs Williams said: "It is a team effort – it's not just one person. It's fantastic that we have won the awards. We are made up for the recognition of all our hard work.

"In a time that a lot of pubs are closing down, something like this makes it all worthwhile."

The awards will be presented to staff at a ceremony in June.

Sarah Bellis, branch chair at South East Lancashire CAMRA, said: "The Pendle Witch has won this year because of the range and quality of ales, but also the community aspect too. Everyone in the community is welcome and you get a broad range of ages going in.

"CAMRA is not just interested in the beer on offer, but also that the pub is part of the community.

"We have about 100 pubs on our books that serve real ale in the area and each year we have to vote for which is the best.

"There will be a proper presentation later in the year when the pub will get both of their well-deserved awards."
