WORK has started to create a new, state-of-the-art all weather pitch at Howe Bridge Leisure Centre.

Wigan Council has invested more than £380,000 to see the pitch installed, a project being carried out as part of the £2.9 million transformation of the site in conjunction with Wigan Council's The Deal.

Cllr Paul Kenny, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for resources, said: "This is the next step in the journey to provide a first rate leisure facility at Howe Bridge for the people of Wigan Borough.

"We are delighted that we will be able to offer this impressive 3G FIFA 2 star pitch for local clubs, football and rugby players to take advantage of.”

Midland CSB is carrying out work to install the pitch, which will be managed by WLCT as part of the new Deal for Leisure and it is due to open this summer.

Atherleigh Cllr and Deputy Mayor Susan Loudon said: "I welcome the improvements to Howe Bridge Sports Centre and the re-introduction of an all-weather pitch has been long awaited.

"Organisers of local football teams and myself have been working on the re-instatement for approx seven years and tried many different avenues to get access to funding.

"This will be like a dream come true to local teams and will enhance the opportunities for local young people."

Tony Hogan, club president at Howe Bridge Mills Football Club, said: “It was fantastic news when the £2.9 million investment for the transformation at the centre was announced.

"The new 3G all-weather pitch will benefit us and other local clubs in the community.”

The renovation of the sports centre will see a new health and fitness suite developed on the first floor which will include an 80-station gym, sauna and steam room, a spinning studio, a studio for group fitness and new changing rooms.

There will be also innovative leisure products on site including VerTGo Clip and Climb, Indoor Extreme Skate Park and adventure play facilities.

The scheme is due to be completed by November this year.

Wigan Council has invested £2.4m in to the project while leisure partner WLCT secured £500,000 from the National Lottery’s Sport England Improvement Fund.
