IN support of Diabetes Week, Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group have advised people of the symptoms to look out for.

Diabetes Week is an annual event that runs from June 14 to June 20 to remind sufferers that they are not on their own when it comes to diabetes.

Dr Tim Dalton, local GP and Chair of NHS Wigan Borough Clinical Commissioning Group said: “Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high.

" It's very important for diabetes to be diagnosed as early as possible because it will get progressively worse if left untreated.

" You should therefore visit your GP if you have regularly have symptoms such as feeling thirsty, passing urine more often than usual, and feeling tired all the time.

"If you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you may be able to control your symptoms simply by eating a more healthy diet, exercising regularly, and monitoring your blood glucose levels.

" Your local GP Practice will be able to help with advice or medication if you have diabetes.

"If you're in the 40-74 age group and without a pre-existing condition, it’s a good idea to make an appointment at your GP Practice for a free NHS Health Check which includes monitoring you for signs of high blood pressure, heart disease or type 2 diabetes. # "Your free NHS Health Check can spot early signs of illness and with help from your doctor you can take steps to help prevent them developing so you'll be more likely to enjoy life for longer”.
