STUDENT journalists from Leigh’s Bedford High School had the chance to try out their interview skills when they put the Mayor through her paces.

Four members of the award winning school’s Enterprising Media Team interviewed the Mayor Cllr Susan Loudon all about Leigh, life and local politics.

The Atherleigh councillor met headteacher Helen Phillips and heard that the budding broadcasters were hoping to catch a few words with her. , she was more than happy to oblige.

The students wrote their their own questions which ranged from 'do you think the Government is doing a good job?' and 'would you like to be Prime Minister?' through to local issues about Leigh's future.

Each member of the team had a specific role, such as interviewer or camera operator. Interviewer Kirston Marsh said she was thrilled at the opportunity.

She said: “The Mayor was really friendly and down-to-earth. She had plenty of time for us and answered all our questions really well. This is great experience for me because one of the career paths I am looking at is journalism. Interviewing important people will look really good on my CV.”

The team, who have to go through an interview before they are accepted, are given experience in a range of skills including journalism, video production and graphic design. They also get the chance to gain experience at Manchester’s Media City.

The Mayor said: "They had some great questions about what can be complicated issues. It’s fantastic that the school is providing students with learning opportunities in this important area. "It’s also great to see young people taking an interest in politics as well. They are the next generation of decision makers and voters, so it’s important that they start to become engaged at an early age.”

Headteacher Helen Phillips said: “We’d like to thank the Mayor for spending time with our students and helping them with their studies.”

“Young people are more media-savvy than ever, so it is important that we offer our students the chance to be one step ahead of the competition through a range of great educational experiences.”
