PRIMARY school pupils from Lowton, Leigh, Golborne and beyond turned out in their droves to take part in the Lowton CE High Olympic Games.

More than 400 Year Five pupils from 11 schools joined the games which is now in its seventh year and has become a highlight in Wigan Borough’s sporting calendar.

The games began with a traditional torch procession and in the run up to the event the torch had been to all the competing schools. The honour of carrying it into the venue went to Leigh CE Primary.

In the opening ceremony there was entertainment from dance and drama students who treated the crowd to the retelling of the ancient Greek origins of the games.

The pupils took part in gymnastics, judo, archery, athletics, cycling and fencing and workshops in drama, music, design technology and art - all with a special Olympic theme.

Lowton CE High School headteacher, Julian Pollard said: “Once again we have enjoyed a real sporting spectacle thanks to everyone who took part. Everyone gave their best and it was fantastic to see everyone from the extended Lowton family getting together to celebrate through sport and friendly competition.”

Mr Pollard added: “Lowton has a proud history of sporting excellence, so it was pleasing for us to see so many talented and enthusiastic young people.

"The Olympic Day is also a great opportunity for them to come and see what might one day be their high school. It gives them the opportunity to meet the staff and see everything we have to offer.”

In the overall competition, the team from St Michael’s Primary School, Leigh, took gold medal position.

Gilded Hollins took silver, while Lowton West and St Catherine’s shared bronze.

Mr Pollard added: “We’d like to congratulate everyone who took part in this event. It’s clear that Wigan Borough isn’t short of sports stars for the future.

"We’d now like to welcome all the pupils and their parents to come and see us again at our open evening and open mornings.”
