STUDENTS from Bedford High School have been honoured for their academic excellence at an awards night.

They were awarded for their achievement in a range of subjects from physics to PE and maths, English and science the students and for their commitment to the school community.

The individual awards were presented in the school hall by guest of honour Trevor Barton, MBE and vocalist Tilly Carroll and guitarist Andrew Rhule made musical performances.

Mr Barton, who is chairman of Trust in Leigh, Leigh Business Forum and a former director of Leigh Centurions, said: “At Bedford we have a school of winners – a winning mentality and a tremendous spirit of self-belief. It is fantastic to see so many people from our local community doing so well thanks to the encouragement they receive from the school.

“It gives us great confidence in the future of our town to see so many of our young people doing so well.”

As well as individual excellence awards, three awards which embody the school’s motto of – To Care, To Learn, To Achieve – and are also a tribute to three former members of school staff – were given.

Year 10 student Miroslav Gorol, aged 15, was presented with the Steve Preston Award (To Care), Rebeka Zommere, aged 14, received the Harry Cartlege Award (To Learn) and Year 10 student Daniel Jackson, aged 15, received the Barrie Mell Award (To Achieve).

A delighted Rebeka said: “Bedford is a great school and I think it’s brilliant that they give the students a night like this to recognise our hard work and to say thank you. It has motivated us to do even better next year.”

Bedford High School head teacher Helen Phillips added: “What is really special about these awards is that they recognise hard work and achievement right from the start of a child’s school career

“We are instilling our young people with the winning spirit right from the beginning and hopefully it will stay with them during their time with us and beyond. Congratulations to all our award winners.

We are now looking forward to GCSE Results Day for another set of excellent results.”
