Airport in early smoking ban

MANCHESTER Airport is to completely ban smoking from Monday, making it the first major airport in Britain to do so.

The ban, which comes six weeks ahead of the national smoking ban on July 1, will cover all public areas of the airport, including cafes and bars.

Spokesman Andrew Cornish said: "We are very pleased to support the smoke-free campaign. It will help provide a pleasant environment for both passengers and staff."

Smokers who want to light up before their flight will be made to use bus-style shelters outside the terminals.

Pat Karney, at Smoke Free Greater Manchester, said: "This is one of the biggest smoking decisions so far - more than 24 million people pass through the airport every year."

Gatwick and Heathrow still allow smoking in departure lounges, cafes and bars, but will be forced to stop when the national smoking ban comes into force.

After July 1, anyone caught smoking in any public place in England will face an on-the-spot fine of £50.

The Government predicts that more than half a million smokers will quit.

Public smoking is already banned in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
