AN ASTLEY school teacher became ‘world famous’ when a selfie posted online to teach children about internet safety was shared around the globe.

Year five St Stephen’s C of E teacher, Siobhan Quinn, created the image as part of a project to teach pupils about the dangers of posting images online.

The 24-year-old invited followers of the school’s Facebook page to share the photo with others to demonstrate how and fast far online content can travel.

“I thought it would get comments from a few different countries, where I knew there were connections from school staff and parents. I didn’t expect it to be shared so much,” said Siobhan,

“As a school we are conscious that our pupils are increasingly using social media as a platform for communicating, yet they don’t have much awareness of the problems and dangers involved.

“Lots of our children are increasingly using Youtube and Instagram and we felt the children really needed to understand just how careful they need to be when posting something online, whatever forum this is in.

“I asked children for their predictions on how far they think a picture would go if we posted it on the school Facebook page, which only 170 parents and family like.

“Suggestions included Lowton, Wigan, Manchester, South England, other countries in Europe. When one girl suggested Africa, the rest of the class laughed.”

The picture was posted at 7pm on Friday, October 9 and by 10:30pm on Sunday, October 11 the photo had 1,000 comments and had been seen by people all over the world.

It currently has 133,860 views and has been commented on by people in 40 different countries, including New Zealand, Russia, Mexico, Oman and Kuwait.

Siobhan was even approached by a woman in the pub two days later who recognised her from the project.

“She said: ‘I know you, I’ve seen your photo on Facebook. You’re a teacher and work in Astley’.

“The children and staff can’t believe how far the picture had travelled.”
