RAIN, rain and more rain was the story over the weekend as all four senior Leigh CC teams were badly affected by the weather.

Only one game was played to a conclusion and that was another frustrating draw for the Second team at home to St Helens.

However the star performance of the weekend belonged to a 16-year-old who scored his maiden hundred for the seniors.

The 1st XI made the trip across to fellow strugglers Hightown only for the rain to intervene after 43 overs and bring an early finish to proceedings.

Batting first Leigh had limped along to 114 for 6 wickets on an inconsistent, plastacine track and while they finished apparently behind on points, it was difficult to estimate what a good score would have been like on that wicket.

Matt Savka had earlier top scored with 32 and Alex Roussak and Steve Williams had battled hard for their respective 20's.

Once again the Seconds were frustrated by the weather and some totally uninspiring cricket from their opponents in another damp squib of a finish.

Winning the toss and batting first, Leigh set about getting runs as quickly as possible. An opening partnership of 111 between Paul Jones and 16-year-old Kieran Grundy set the tone and was continued by Matt Hibbert (20) and Tim McKiernan (21*) as the hosts declared on 193 for 3 after just 41 overs.

The day's proceedings, however, were illuminated by the maiden hundred scored by young Grundy who made exactly 100 in as exciting a knock you would wish to see at this level.

Opening the innings for only the second time, Kieran blazed his way to his half century in quick time, in particular he took full toil on anything short, which he dispatched to all areas of the leg side. Having reached his first milestone, he then settled in to take full advantage of his start and reached his ton in great style with 10 fours and five sixes.

St Helens in reply soon put up the shutters and the bulk of the last two hours consisted of Leigh trying everything to dislodge the stubborn batters who simply refused to play any shots on a true but unresponsive wicket.

Sunday's matches all went the way as anticipated as rain gradually caught up with the 1st XI at Farnworth Social Circle (Farnworth 66 for 3 off 16 overs); 3rd XI (86 for 4 at Fleetwood Hesketh, Matt Schleiner 34 not out) and the 4th XI at home to Newton (Leigh 104 for 1 off 31 overs, Tim Edwards 51, Mattie McKiernan 31 not out).
