CUP king Alex Murphy raises the Rugby League Challenge Cup high on the Leigh Town Hall balcony during victory celebrations following Leigh’s resounding Wembley win over Leeds in May 1971.
Half-back and player-coach Murphy masterminded Leigh’s victory and ensured he will forever be remembered for services to rugby league in the town by coaching the club to a memorable 1981-2 double when they won the Lancashire Cup and the Division One championship.
Coach Murphy is extreme right on the front row in the picture of John Woods’ side with their victory spoils, pictured in 1982.
