FAMILY, friends and colleagues of a young footballer who died of heart failure, have raised money to buy a defibrillator in his memory.

Daniel Young was 16-years-old when he collapsed during a football match in Tyldesley in 2005, just minutes after scoring a goal.

The devoted Bolton Wanderers fan was playing centre midfield in a match against Bolton Lads Club at Tyldesley Rugby Club when he collapsed.

He was put in a recovery position by officials and given emergency treatment on the pitch by paramedics before being taken to Bolton Royal Infirmary where he died.

After his death he was found to have been suffering from an enlarged heart, which went undetected.

On November 25, ten years after his sudden death and what would have been his 27th birthday his mum Dionne presented a defibrillator to his former work place Tesco in Atherton.

Mrs Young and her husband Craig Young set up the Daniel Young Memorial Fund after their son’s death and have campaigned to make free heart screenings available since his death with the aim of preventing the same tragedy.

In their son’s name they have now raised more than £1300 to fund a defibrillator, a medical screen and made a donation to charity Cardiac Risk in the Young.

To raise the funds classmates of Mr Young, who attended Fred Longworth High School held a reunion in his memory, while Leigh Centurions donated a rugby ball, a signed Liverpool Football shirt was also donated to raffle off in an online auction and Mrs Young held a cake sale in Tesco.

The 52-year-old from Atherton, who works in Tesco said: “This is something I have wanted to do ever since Daniel’s death.

“I chose Tesco because Daniel worked there and there are staff in the store 24 hours a day so it will always be accessible to people whether they are coming home from pubs or clubs.

“St John’s Ambulance has said that they will come into store and train all of the first aiders to use the defibrillator for free, which is really nice.”
