THE name of a new Hungry Horse pub in Leigh will honour the town's mining history.

The new food venue, which will be located on Parsonage Retail Park has been named by a resident in Astley.

The pub ran a competition in October asking for name suggestions from borough residents with names such as the Colliery, the Pit Pony and the Arley enterred.

However the name has been chosen as 'Parsonage' an entry by John Knowles in Astley, who has won a £100 gift voucher.

Marc McGuigan, business unit director for Hungry Horse said: "I would like to thank everyone who sent in their suggestions to us.

"We wanted to ensure our name reflects the area, which is why we wanted the help of our future customers.

"There were a number of variations of the name put forward such as the Parsonage Pit, the Parsonage Pony and the Parsonage Rest.

"It became clear from the suggestions we received that the town is proud of their mining background.

"With this in mind the Hungry Horse team decided to name the pub the Parsonage, after the Parsonage Colliery coal mine, which operated in Leigh until the early nineties.

"We are very excited to get our doors open and bring our fun, great value and family friendly pub to Leigh.”

The Hungry Horse is due to open later this year.
