THE Leigh Lions Club donated six new nebulisers to Royal Albert Edward Infirmary on Friday.

They will aid patients suffering from COPD, a common lung disease that obstructs the airways and makes it difficult to breathe.

It is usually caused by either smoking or exposure to fumes and dusty places, meaning it is a preventable condition which can be treated but cannot be cured.

These nebulisers will deliver medication to help ease breathlessness.

The Leigh Lions raised the money for the nebulisers through Father Christmas and his sleigh fundraising events held at Morrisons supermarket and TK Maxx in December.

Chairman Tony Lewis said: “Leigh Lions supports our community in any way we can. Projects like this are what we are about.

“We were approached before Christmas by the hospital and asked if we would like to raise money for these much-needed nebulisers, and of course we were happy to do it.”

The club raised £450 for the six machines, which were supplied by Wigan-based company Evergreen Nebulisers, who also donated a machine.

Nigel Green, from Evergreen Nebulisers, said: “It has given us great pleasure in assisting Leigh Lions in its fundraising efforts.

“We are always happiest when helping with local projects in our community.”

Tony Lewis along with Deborah Joy Lechouvitis and Ken Staff from Leigh Lions handed over the nebulisers to staff on the Ince Ward at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

Asthma nurse Sandra Dermott said: “We are thrilled to receive this very generous donation by the Leigh Lions.”

“Respiratory disease is especially prevalent in our area and we aim to provide the best possible care to local sufferers.

“This donation will enable us to do this and will allow our excellent service to go from strength to strength".
