THE council has made a borough-wide call to get people to clean up the streets.

The appeal for everyone to 'work together to create a place we can all be proud of' follows the launch of the national Clean for The Queen initiative, which aims for the country to be given a significant tidy-up ahead of her 90th birthday in April.

The council is requesting that groups, individuals and schools ‘do their bit’ and sign up to help clear up the litter that blights the borough's streets.

Cllr Kevin Anderson, cabinet member for environment, said: “We want to have a safe, clean and green borough but, with £60 million to save, we need the help of our residents.

“Community spirit in the borough is fantastic and there are already great examples of places that really maintain their streets and are great neighbours.

“We hope this is something that can be replicated.”

It is hoped that the campaign will encourage more people to take pride in where they live as well as relieve pressure on council resources.

The clean-ups will take place on the weekend of March 4 to 6 and collection points will be set up in the borough to pick up cleaning equipment.
