STUDENTS from Fred Longworth High School in Tyldesley are doing volunteer work with the Missing People charity as part of their Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

The students will be supporting the charity's national Child Rescue Alert system as part of the three-month volunteer placement.

Child Rescue Alert sends registered user an alert in the event of a child abduction or a child’s life being at immediate risk.

It has a target of one million sign-ups.

The students are encouraging people from Leigh, Atherton and Tyldesley to register and have organised a sign-up event at their school and arranged for Tesco Atherton to hold an awareness event for shoppers.

Alison Taylor, regional manager at Missing People for the north of England and Wales, said: "As they have worked so hard in planning and preparing how to support the campaign I suggested they get in touch with local media to give them and Child Rescue Alert a ‘shout out’.

“They are also hoping to persuade Andy Burnham MP to join them.

"There are some very determined students at Fred Longworth – a real credit to the school.”

The system is run in partnership with the National Crime Agency, Children Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, Groupcall and Missing People.

The scheme is running until Sunday, February 28.
