TWELVE months earlier two-try Ryan Brierley was man of the match as Leigh opened their Ladbrokes Challenge Cup campaign by putting 64 points past London Broncos.

One year on, with Brierley just 24 hours away from becoming a Super League player, Cory Paterson grabbed a four-try haul to take Centurions one step closer to Wembley.

Paterson’s first touchdown quartet of his career was a perfect way for the shaven headed Aussie to celebrate his captaincy.

And the total 12-try rout further evidence Leigh are growing into the season. Not there was any doubt about the outcome of this fourth round tie.

Dewsbury’s shock win the previous night over Bradford was a reminder of what could possibly happen without 100 percent focus.

Any lingering concerns vanished within minutes of the start as Leigh clicked into gear.

Six of their dozen tries came in the opening quarter with ‘Captain Marvel’ Paterson crossing for a hat-trick. The former Newcastle Knight forward’s fourth touch down came after 64 minutes.

Workington were swept away by Leigh’s Saturday night try fever, gamely managing three in reply from Jarrod Sammut, Theerapol Ritson and Peter Whiteley.

But it was practically one-way traffic from last season’s Challenge Cup quarter-finalists towards the Cumbrians’ line.

Martyn Ridyard helped himself to 10 goals as Centurions added further touchdowns from Ben Reynolds, Liam Hood, Jonny Pownall, Lee Smith, Harrison Hansen (2), Jamie Acton and Sam Hopkins.
