THE UK’s largest textile testing lab has been opened in Leigh, bringing worldwide business to the area.

Intertek welcomed MP for Leigh and shadow home secretary Andy Burnham on Friday to officially open its one-stop laboratory.

The 30-year-old Brewery Lane site has been expanded to incorporate the textile flammability laboratory, a new chemical laboratory and upgraded textile testing capabilities.

The new one-stop testing facility will support UK international manufacturers and retailers to test flammability and carry out fire analysis and chemical testing on a broad range of textile products.

Mr Burnham said: “I fully support what Intertek has done here.

“By creating a world-class facility in Leigh, they will bring more businesses from across the world to the north west, helping to support local jobs and build business.

“I am proud to open this new facility, which maintains a link with Leigh’s past in textiles.”
