THE Friends of Atherton Parks group has been boosted by donations of tools and flowers from supportive businesses.

Leigh’s Sainsbury’s store donated tools to help clean up the area after Mabel Jones from Atherton Library Support Group wrote to the supermarket asking for help.

Flowers donated by Bents Home and Garden in Glazebury will be used to brighten up the area.

James Hunt, Friends of Atherton Parks chairman, said: “It’s amazing. At a time when the council seems strapped for money it is great when the community come out and make the decision to do it themselves.”

Stuart Gerrard, chairman of Atherton Residents’ Association, added: “This is community action in full flow. With the parks groups, library group, Keep Atherton Tidy, residents and now businesses supporting each other we have something special. I feel there are great times ahead.”
