THIS week we take a look back at a former Atherleigh railway stop in 1964.
The picture is of the Ben’s Brew station on the Bolton-Leigh-Kenyon railway, taken a year before it was closed.
The line built between 1828 and 1830 was reportedly the second in the world to carry foot passengers, having been beaten by the Liverpool-Manchester line by two months.
It was named after Ben Flavell, who became gatekeeper at the station after arriving in Leigh from Dudley in 1845.
The footbridge, which is visible in the photograph, was also dismantled in 1965.
In 1984 the Atherleigh Bypass was constructed and the Railway Inn was demolished.
If you have a photograph you would like us to use in Look back at Leigh, send it to newsdesk@leighjournal.co.uk with your name, address and a daytime telephone number, plus details of when the picture was taken and what it shows.
