A SECOND man has been charged with the murder of a 50-year-old dad-of-two who died following a gang attack on Railway Road in Leigh.

Kevin Derbyshire, 32, of Findlay Street, Leigh, has been remanded to appear before Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday, May 17.

Dwayne Turner, 28, of Railway Road, had already been charged for the murder of Edward Wood, who died after being attacked in Leigh.

He will also appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Tuesday.

Two other men, aged 38 and 46, arrested in connection with the Leigh man's death have been bailed pending further enquiries.

The attack took place outside the Oceans Eleven Chip shop at around 11pm on Wednesday, May 4.

Detective Chief Inspector Jane Little, from Greater Manchester Police’s major incident team, said: “Edward’s death has left his family absolutely devastated and we continue to have specially trained officers providing them with support at this difficult time."

Mr Wood was set to become a granddad for the first time later this year and his family have spoken of their ‘deep sadness’ over his death.

In a statement they said: “We are deeply saddened with the tragic and meaningless loss of Edward. He was a much-loved son, dad, brother and uncle.

“The tragic news has shocked us as a family.

“Edward lived alone in Leigh and had a special bond with his mother Lois, with whom he spent a great deal of time.

“We are all coming to terms as to why Edward lost his life.

“Edward was a dad of two – to Ryan and Daniel – and had just learned he was to be a granddad later this year, and was really looking forward to it.

“This news had given him a new spring in his step and he was excited about the future.

“We would like to thank everyone for all the kind messages of support we have received at this very sad time."
