A NEW hub to help residents who care for people with dementia is being unveiled at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary onThe hub will offer help and sup Thursday.

The Carers’ Talking Space will offer information and advice on how to best care for people with dementia.

Residents will be directed to health professionals who can help in relation to the health and wellbeing of both the carer and the person they are caring for.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust's latest venture is housed in the hospital's Christopher Home building.

Its opening has been timed to coincide with National Dementia Awareness Week, which runs until Sunday, May 22.

Jean Ramsdale, lead dementia nurse at the hospital, said: “I am delighted that we are able to launch the new Carer’s Talking Space at the infirmary.

“It will allow for expert advice to be given to visitors who may be caring for someone living with dementia in their personal lives.

“This is crucial, because caring for someone living with dementia is not something that can just be done in hospital.

“It is something that must be done compassionately and effectively at home, so that people living with dementia can live as full a life as possible.”

The Carers’ Talking Space will be opened in a special ceremony at 2pm.

The hospital trust received help from Alzheimer’s Society, Wigan and Leigh Carers’ Centre and community link workers in setting up the new centre.

The organisations will be on hand to help visitors to the centre at selected times...

Alzheimer’s Society: 1.30pm to 3.30pm on the first and third Friday of every month.

Wigan and Leigh Carer’s Centre: 1pm to 3pm on the second and fourth Monday of every month.
