HOUSEHOLDERS in Leigh are being urged to ask for professional credentials before allowing pest controllers into their home.

The move has been prompted by reports of bogus callers trying to gain entry to properties in parts of the UK by claiming to have received complaints about rats.

Pest experts say homeowners can avoid similar issues by insisting on production of a special identity card before agreeing to any inspection or work.

The document is only issued to members of professional register Basis Prompt, an industry initiative providing independent proof that technicians have received proper training and continue to update their expertise.

Stephen Jacob, chief executive of Basis Prompt, said: “The threat posed by bogus officials seems to be ever-present and people should always be on their guard.

“The pest control industry is also awash with unqualified traders who can land people with huge bills for jobs that are only half-finished.

“Our identity card is widely recognised as a symbol of quality and professionalism. It helps expert pest controllers to stand out from the crowd.

"All technicians on our database are fully qualified and up to date with the latest products and techniques, so homeowners can be sure that anyone carrying the card is exactly who they say they are.”
