THIS week we look back at a photograph of a policeman patrolling the entrance of a Leigh street that was taken in 1930.

Also prominent in the Kirkhall Lane snap is an advert on the side of a building for Wigan firm Alsteads Suits.

To the left you can see the edge of the Leigh Co-op building, which is still standing.

The group of old houses in the centre were condemned and demolished in 1931, allowing the sharp and narrow corner into Kirkhall Lane to be widened.

This area was also one of Leigh's first motor bus routes in the 1920s, leading up to the Tamar pub on Wigan Road.

If you have a photograph you would like us to use in Look back at Leigh, send it to newsdesk@leighjournal.co.uk with your name, address and a daytime telephone number, plus details of when the picture was taken and what it shows.
