A GROUP of travellers have set up camp at Shakerley Common on the border of Tyldesley and Atherton.

A spokesman for Wigan Council said: “Notice has be served on the travellers at Shakerley Common with a view to a Friday eviction if they have not vacated the land.”

Groups of travellers have camped illegally at several areas in the borough in recent weeks, most recently at Crankwood Road and Kings Park in Leigh.

Travellers have also been evicted from land near The Rose Centre and Winton Road in Lowton, Golborne Parkside Sports and Community Club in Golborne and Higher Green Lane in Astley.

Karl Battersby, director of economy and environment at the council, said: “We are currently developing a traveller policy which will ensure that we deal with unauthorised encampments in a consistent and appropriate manner.

“The draft policy will come to scrutiny for discussion later in the summer, followed by cabinet and finally to full council for adoption.

“A discussion has taken place to inform members of the proposed policy and to outline the approach that has been taken due to recent events.”
