JULY marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and community groups have secured funding to hold commemorative events.

They include a commemoration service at St George's Church in Tyldesley on July 17 and a First World War and Battle of the Somme concert at Lowton Labour Club on September 14.

Wigan Council pledged to spend £250,000 between 2014 and 2018 to mark the centenary of the First World War and a number of community groups applied for a slice of the grant.

Cllr Paul Kenny, lead member for armed forces at the council, said: “It is extremely important that we remember such prominent times in our history.

“Thanks to those who have been successful in receiving the funding, there will now be memorable events taking place where older generations can reflect and young people can learn.”
