THOUSANDS of customers have already visited the new B&M store in Tyldesley, which is delighted with the 'great feedback' it has received since opening for business on Friday.

The discount retailer's move from The Square to the larger former Morrisons site on Shuttle Street has created 40 jobs.

Morrisons' closure left Tyldesley with just one cash machine for residents to use but B&M has now vowed to have one installed.

A B&M spokesman said: “We have had a great response to our new store and we have been really busy so far, welcoming thousands of shoppers.

“Feedback on the range has been great, particularly on the homeware selection and our manager’s special offers.”

The former Morrisons store, which employed more than 100 people, closed on November 28.

Some residents had called for another major supermarket chain to take over the site before B&M was revealed as the new tenants.

Tyldesley Labour councillor and vice chairman of the Wigan planning committee Stephen Hellier said: “It is no secret that I would have preferred a one-stop shop supermarket as a direct replacement for Morrisons.

“However in response to the request I made to them for a cash machine to be provided, B&M tell me that one will soon be installed at the new Tyldesley store.

“This is very much appreciated.

“The 40 additional jobs arising out of the enlargement of the business are also most welcome.

“I wish B&M and its staff well for the future.”

The new B&M store was opened at 9am by seven-year-old Morgan Kay-Wright of ChildFlight, a Manchester-based charity that provides flights and holidays for sick and deserving children.

B&M was formed in 1978 and is now one of the leading variety retailers in the UK, employing more than 22,500 staff and boasting more than 500 stores.

The discount retailer sells groceries, bread and milk and a wide range of other foodstuffs, as well as items for the home and garden.

The Shuttle Street store was one of 11 Morrisons to close last year due to cost-cutting.
