GOLBORNE in Bloom's bid to improve the town's appearance has been boosted by a £500 donation from its neighbouring Asda store.

Mick Maguire, manager of the Edge Green Lane supermarket, presented the group and with the money last Tuesday.

Ian Massey, 76, who is a member of the group, said: “We would love to thank Asda for supporting us.

"It is important to keep the neighbourhood nice and also to build community spirit.

“We hope that in the future we can use every spare bit of public land not already in use to grow something for the community to use, like vegetables.

"This money gets us one step closer to that goal."

Ian added: "The group was started by resident Claire Baker, who was concerned that the potentially beautiful village of Golborne was looking a bit sad.

“Since then – with the help of Cllr Yvonne Klieve, Cllr Richard Barber and Wigan Council's Nick Burdekin – Golborne in Bloom has become part of the Wigan in Bloom project."
