A NEIGHBOURHOOD charity is looking for gardeners that weed out the competition to take part in their garden competition.

Leigh Neighbours, a Westleigh charity which supports community development projects in the area, will be holding its In Bloom competition on August 8, in partnership with Wigan Council.

The group is asking for green-fingered residents to take part in a range of different categories such as front garden, back yard, alleyway, public space and hanging baskets.

Judges will then arrange to visit the nominees before announcing the winners in each category later in the summer with cash prizes up to £50 up for grabs.

Making the area cleaner and greener is one of the top priorities for Leigh Neighbours, a charity which was originally set up in 2012 with £1 million of National Lottery money to invest in the area over the course of ten years.

Leigh resident Bill Burton is a board member on Leigh Neighbours Partnership Board and is also one of the competition judges. He said: ““We hope this competition will pull people together and help make our area a place to live that we can all be proud of.

“One of the fundamental objectives of Leigh Neighbours is to help generate community spirit and civic pride.

“Our environmental projects have already gone a long way towards achieving this, so we decided to develop the idea and take it a step further.

“Making the area cleaner and greener is one of the priorities that residents told us was important to them and according to the results of our latest public consultation, it’s still as important to people today as it was then.”

To download an entry form visit lnpb.org.uk or pick them up from Leigh library, the Citizens Advice Bureau or the Life Centre.

To be eligible, projects must be based in the Leigh Neighbours area.

The closing date for submissions is 5pm on Friday July 29 and winners will be notified by the August 19.
