STUDENTS at Bedford High School have just played host to young soccer stars all the way from South Africa.

The visit comes after the Manchester Road school set up a special international partnership with The Gardens Commercial High School in Cape Town.

The link meant that seven students from The Gardens, all aged 16, made the 18 hour journey from their homes all the way to Leigh to play against the school’s best soccer stars.

The visit was to help the students find out more about life in England, experience a different culture and celebrate a shared passion for the beautiful game.

Mick Thompson, head of PE at Bedford High School said: “The boys took part in a typical school day to see how it differs from what they are used to at home where they took part in lessons and our students acted as buddies for the visitors during their time with us.

Leon Abrahams, a teacher from The Gardens Commercial High School who accompanied the students, added: “We have been made to feel very welcome by our hosts here at Bedford.

“The students have enjoyed seeing how the school is different from their own.

“Everyone has really loved their time here.”

While England’s national team was crashing out of 2016 European Championship, the Bedford boys kept the flag flying through a series of matches with their new South African friends who also played against other Leigh teams.

Helen Phillips, head teacher at Bedford High School, said: “We were delighted to welcome the students from The Gardens and they were a credit to their school and great ambassadors for their country.

“The visit was not only a chance for them to learn about a different culture but also an opportunity for our students to gain an insight into the lives of South African students.

“We want to encourage our students to appreciate and understand the world in which they live and hopefully experience as much of it as they possibly can.

“Just like the football, when it comes to careers and educational opportunities, we want our students to compete on a truly international scale.”
