A RELATIVE visiting a failing Atherton care home resident was forced to shop for coffee after being told it had all but run out of supplies.

They also claim that their family member did not have a bath for two weeks because 'staff said they hadn't the time' in incidents reported by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following an inspection of The Hamiltons care home, which was deemed 'inadequate' overall.

The Hamilton Street home failed the inspection and has been put in special measures with inspectors ruling it 'inadequate' in terms of both safety and leadership and as 'requiring improvement' in both 'effectiveness' and 'responsiveness'.

However the home was classified as 'good' in regard to the level of care offered.

The inspection was held in April and the report was published earlier this month.

In the report the unnamed relative said: "I asked a staff member for a cup of coffee and was told there was none in the home and there were only 11 tea bags left so I had to go and buy some myself.

"At tea times it is bedlam because there are only two staff members on duty.

"Once my family member didn't have a bath for two weeks and staff said they hadn't the time."

Another relative complained that their family member 'smelled a bit'.

Members of staff complained to inspectors, with one saying: "It is a real struggle at the minute. All I hear is that we are going to get more staff but it never happens.

"We really struggle to give people baths, showers, do activities and spend quality time with people."

The inspectors found that five safeguarding incidents had not been reported to the local authority, including four involving physical abuse and one of verbal abuse between residents.

The Journal attempted to contact Krinvest Limited, who run the care home, to comment on the inspection findings but the company did respond.
