THIS week we take a look back at a photograph of boarded-up shops ready to be demolished to make way for Leigh Town Hall.

The row of shops on Market Street were demolished between 1900 and 1904 as part of Leigh council's town centre development plans.

The front of the current Town Hall was built on this spot between 1904 and 1907.

On the left corner we can see Higson's Confectioners and next door is Mary Fletcher’s book makers.

The next building is Sarah Unsworth's Dining Rooms and at the back of that is R Bleakeley's Tripe and Trotter shop.

On the far right is Samuel Page's Grocers, situated on the corner of Newton Street.

If you have a photograph you would like us to use in Look back at Leigh, send it to newsdesk@leighjournal.co.uk with your name, address and a daytime telephone number, plus details of when the picture was taken and what it shows.
