TEENAGERS across the borough are celebrating their exam results today as nervous students find out how they fared in their GCSEs.

Two students at Fred Longworth High School in Tyldesley are jumping for joy after getting straight A*s across all 11 of their subjects.

Megan Walsh and Lauren Dawes were both pleasantly surprised by their perfect set of grades this morning.

Megan said: “I have worked really hard for this, but was shocked at the results.

“The teachers were really supportive and I would not have done it without them.”

Students at St Mary’s Catholic High School are also over the moon after the school achieved the best GCSE results in its history.  The Astley school refused to give specific details of its exam successes, saying that 'schools are now to be judged on the progress that each pupil makes and how the school has added value to that person's education rather than just gaining five A* to C grades'.

However head teacher Andrew Dawson said: “I would like to congratulate students as these results reflect their excellent progress and are the best results in our school’s history.

“GCSEs are more challenging than ever before and there are so many pressures on young people today that it is so pleasing to see hard work, resilience and perseverance rewarded.”
