A NINETY-two-year-old woman is celebrating after being crowned a hula-hooping champion while another pensioner aced a tennis competition.

It was all part of a care village's Olympic-themed sports day held to encourage older people to exercise.

Inspired by Team GB’s record medal haul at the Rio Games, Belong Atherton organised a host of fun sports events for 40 of its residents to enjoy in the garden of the village on Mealhouse Lane.

There was beanbag throwing, a penalty shootout competition and the customary egg and spoon race as residents with dementia were encouraged to try to reminisce about sport days they enjoyed in their childhood.

Gold medal winners included 92-year-old Mary Robinson, who gyrated her way to the hula-hooping crown; 87-year-old Mary-Anne James, who took the tennis title; 73-year-old Jean Woodward, who showed England’s football flops how to score from 12 yards in a penalty shootout competition; and 76-year-old David Speak, who was first past the post in the egg and spoon race.

Gemma Willetts, activity co-ordinator at Belong Atherton, said: “The sports day was great and everyone got very involved with all the activities.

“The day helped residents to remember sports that they had previously played and some even taught our staff members how to hula-hoop.”
