TENANTS are set to have their say on the future of housing services in the borough.

New proposals on how housing services can be transformed in the borough should be unveiled through a public consultation later this year.

Wigan Council and Wigan and Leigh Homes tenants are being urged to help shape the future of housing for the decades ahead.

The proposed consultation follows a review by the council of its housing services.

This explored how housing has the potential to support wider ranging council services as part of the council's Deal for the Future strategy.

The council's 22,000 houses are currently managed by arms-length organisation (ALMO) Wigan and Leigh Homes but it now wants to manage them itself.

The benefits of this would be closer delivery with the council's health and social care services, efficiency savings which can be ploughed back into frontline services and greater opportunities for more regeneration projects.

Karl Battersby, the council's director for economy and environment, said: "This is a proposal for a significant change in how we deliver housing services in the borough, and we would urge all tenants to take part in the consultation from November and let us know what they think of the proposals, and how we can continue to improve tenant engagement.

"It is essential that the consultation involves as many people as possible so we can move forward confidently with a housing service that can achieve the very best for residents in the years ahead."

The council's cabinet will meet on Thursday, September 29, to consider the report.
