TESCO and FareShare are urging charities and community groups to register for a new scheme which will see unsold food become free meals for vulnerable people across the borough.

As part of its pledge to cut waste, Tesco’s Community Food Connection programme with FareShare FoodCloud links charities and community groups to stores via an app that alerts them to surplus food items available at the end of each day.

Rifka Chakkalakal, Tesco’s community food programmes manager, said: “No food that can be eaten should go to waste.

“We are really excited to start working on this initiative to ensure that any unsold food we have is made use of.

“We are looking forward to forging strong links with local charities and community groups in Leigh, and to use this initiative to support their efforts to help vulnerable people in our community.”

Any charities or community groups in the borough using food to support people that would like to join the scheme should register their interest by visiting fareshare.org.uk/fareshare-foodcloud.
