A TWO-hour parking restriction has been imposed at a car park in Tyldesley town centre.

Wigan Council approved a proposal to limit the use of Derby Street car park between 8am and 6pm Monday to Saturday after businesses and residents complained about a lack of spaces being available due to vehicles parking there for excessive periods of time.

Mike Worden, assistant director for planning and transport at the council, said: “The proposal has been approved following concerns from businesses who trade in the town and residents who shop in the town.

“The order will limit waiting on the car park to a maximum of two hours, allowing appropriate control of the car park and generating a turnaround of parking spaces to ensure residents can continue to frequent the town’s shops and facilities.”

The proposal was also backed by ward councillor Nazia Rehman.

Cllr Rehman said: “I welcome the new two-hour limit on parking on Derby Street car park because we were receiving complaints from residents, shoppers and business owners about cars parked for long periods of time resulting in a lack of parking spaces.

“The new limits will ensure the availability of parking spaces throughout the day.

“We are also aware of the emerging need for more parking spaces for the commuters, due to success of the guided busway.

"I want to assure residents that Transport for Greater Manchester and Wigan Council are monitoring the situation closely and residents' concerns will be addressed appropriately.

“I hope the new time limit on Derby Street car park will deliver the expected benefit to resident and shoppers."
