RESIDENTS are invited to take a test to check their liver health next Wednesday, November 16, as part of Alcohol Awareness Week.

Free non-evasive liver scans will be available at the Healthy Routes store on Bradshawgate, Leigh, on a first come, first served basis from 10am to 4pm.

It is an opportunity to find out how healthy your liver is and learn more about the impact alcohol can have on the body.

The quick test can help to reveal factors in someone’s weekly life which could be changed to help reduce the risk of developing serious conditions such as viral hepatitis and fatty liver disease.

Cllr Keith Cunliffe, portfolio holder for health and adult social care at Wigan Council, said: “We are happy to support Alcohol Awareness Week with screening events.

"And there is a wealth of support out there for anyone who feels they, or someone they know, may be drinking too much.

“It is easy to think that a few drinks won’t make a difference to your health, but when it is added to an unhealthy diet and little exercise it can all take a strain on your liver.

"So why not come down next week, take a test and pick up some helpful advice on how to reduce your risk from serious conditions.”

For those unable to attend, the British Liver Trust has developed an online screener that acts as an early warning system.

The screener takes five minutes to complete and is available at loveyourliver.org.

The Healthy Routes service can support people to drink less alcohol, quit smoking, be more active and eat more healthily through one-to-one support.
