THIS week we take a look back at a 1960s photograph of children under the Christmas tree on Tyldesley Market Square.

It was taken by a Leigh Journal photographer in December of that year and features twin sisters Jill and Carol Keefe.

Their sister Susan Payne sent us the photograph and we are grateful for the contribution.

She recalls: “We used to go to Lewis’s store in Manchester with my mum and auntie to see Father Christmas every year, which was a special treat.

“With regard to presents, we used to get an apple, orange, an annual, a new outfit and whatever our parents could afford as a main present.

“Sometimes it was a second-hand bike or pram, but we always got a doll with an outfit that had been knitted by hand by my auntie.

“Happy days.”

If you have a photograph you would like us to use in our Look Back at Leigh pages email it to newsdesk@leighjournal.co.uk. Don’t forget to include your name, address and a daytime telephone number, plus details of when the picture was taken and what it shows.
