A businessman and his teenage daughter have been helping a charity in Uganda.

David Roberts, who owns MBS Corporate Advisory in Barrowford, and is a non-executive director at CoolKit, has supported the Bumba Foundation for several years but has just returned from a hands-on trip with the charity.

David asked CoolKit, a refrigerated vehicle conversion company, to sponsor him for the work he was doing with the UK based charity – which the company was keen to do as David had been instrumental in helping the business achieve double-digit, and year-on-year growth in sales revenues and profits for the last four years.

David was introduced to the Bumba Foundation, which has built and staffed schools and funds orphans and children from poor families to access schooling, by University friend Martin who set up the organisation in 2011 after working in Uganda for the Red Cross.

He said: “I have supported the charity financially over the last few years through donations and being involved in fundraising events and Martin said to me if I ever fancy going out there he would arrange it – so we did.

“Me and my 16-year-old daughter Maddie and her friend William Towneley have just got back from helping the Foundation with one of their projects. It was really challenging - there are famine conditions and people just don’t have enough food.”

Maddie and Will, who attend St Christopher’s High School in Accrington, raised £2,500 towards the refurbishment and development of the school.

The trio stayed in the remote village of Iki Iki with a local family while helping the charity with various projects and teaching the children English.

He said: “The living conditions were very different to what we have at home and it was a huge culture shock, but the generosity of the village people, and the massive smiles of the kids who followed us everywhere was very humbling.”

“We had a life changing experience. We worked hard whilst we were there in 37 degree heat, lived and ate in a remote Ugandan village, danced with the kids and made some lasting friendships. Every one of us would go back tomorrow!”
